About This Book
Who is Jesus Christ, and why does His identity matter for our salvation? Bishop Youannis of Gharbia addresses these questions through the confession of the Church and the witness of Scripture. Beginning with redemption and the renewal of creation, he places the Incarnation at the centre of the Christian understanding of the Saviour.
The book traces Christ’s birth, life, mission, sufferings and glorification, then develops its case for His divinity. His eternity, life-giving power, forgiveness of sins, knowledge, judgement and authority over life and death are considered alongside His miracles, the work of creation and the worship He receives. These themes form a connected account of who Christ is and what He does.
Bishop Youannis also takes up passages that can trouble readers: Christ’s growth in wisdom, His prayers and obedience, His words about the Father and His cry from the Cross. He reads these within the unity of the Incarnation, the Trinity and the eternal Sonship, explaining their place in the Church’s confession.
Drawn from a sustained series of pastoral sermons, Who Is Jesus Christ? brings doctrinal questions back to the saving work of God. It offers readers a substantial guide to the relationship between Christ’s divinity, His true humanity and the salvation for which He entered the life of the world.
Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
