About This Book

◆

Bishop Youannis of Gharbia gathers thirty teachings into a sustained map of Christian spiritual life. The journey begins with repentance, confession and Communion, then looks closely at humility and pride, honour and purity, anger, speech, silence and the temptation to judge. These teachings ask what happens inside the heart when habits wound its relationship with God and other people, and how repentance opens the way towards mercy.

The second movement turns to the practices that train attention: prayer, fasting, giving, spiritual reading, the Holy Bible, spiritual exercises, solitude and service. Each practice is considered as part of a life that moves between inward devotion and outward love. The reader is repeatedly brought back to watchfulness, self-examination, discipline and the patient work of becoming faithful in ordinary circumstances.

The final teachings widen the horizon to God’s love for humanity, humanity’s love for God and love for one another. Faith in God and in the miracles of Christ leads into hope, peace and surrender. The narrow gate and the Kingdom give the spiritual life its direction, while the earlier teachings supply the habits needed to walk towards that end.

Taken together, the thirty chapters speak to the daily questions of Christian formation: how to turn from sin, pray honestly, receive mercy, serve another person and remain attentive to God. Bishop Youannis writes from within the wisdom of Scripture and the Church’s fathers, offering readers a connected way to consider the heart, its practices and its hope.

Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
