About This Book

◆

The Bible and the person of Christ stand together at the heart of Bishop Youannis’s Christian faith. In seven sermons delivered during Great Lent in 1979, he sets out to address questions about Scripture’s truth and integrity, and to show why the Bible’s witness gathers around the living Saviour. The book begins with the Bible’s place in Christian life and with Christ as its subject from beginning to end.

The opening studies meet objections directed towards both Testaments. Bishop Youannis considers claims about the Bible and modern science, Noah and the Flood, Jonah, archaeology, Paul, the date and authorship of the New Testament books, alleged Gospel contradictions and the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. The arguments remain those of the historical author, presented with their original apologetic purpose.

The central sections read the Old Testament in relation to Christ. Adam, Noah, Melchizedek, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and the high priest are examined as figures or types; the Passover, the Day of Atonement, Jubilee, cleansing from leprosy and the cities of refuge are read as worship and institutions that point towards Him. The Old Testament books and prophecies then lead into Christ’s work as prophet, priest and king and His presence in the Gospels, Acts and Revelation.

The closing study follows humanity’s longing for a Saviour, the blessings of the New Testament, Christ’s saving love and the Lamb’s eternal wedding feast. Together these sermons offer a connected way to read Scripture as faith, history, prophecy and invitation to encounter Christ.

Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
