About This Book

◆

What does it mean to build a life upon faith in Christ? Bishop Youannis of Gharbia begins with the question of Christ’s place in the thought of Jews, pagans, Muslims, rationalists and modern thinkers, then asks why humanity needed a Redeemer. The answer unfolds through salvation, the renewal of creation and Christ’s example of human perfection.

The book’s doctrinal centre is the confession of Christ’s divinity. Bishop Youannis follows Old Testament prophecies concerning His coming, birth, life, suffering and glorification, then considers the divine attributes and works Christ reveals: life, forgiveness, judgement, authority, creation, preservation, miracles and worship. He also explains the unity of God and the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

The Cross receives sustained attention. The discussion moves from the wound of sin and the need for a mediator to the conditions the Redeemer must meet and the historical and Christian evidence for Christ’s death. The argument is theological and apologetic, but remains tied to the question of how redemption changes human life.

In its final movement, the book turns from confession to holiness. Christ’s purity, humility, gentleness and courage become the pattern for Christian virtue; the early Church’s faithfulness is tested through suffering and persecution. These sermons invite readers to know Christ more deeply and to let faith become love, courage, repentance and steadfast life within the Church.

Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
