About This Book

◆

Bishop Youannis of Gharbia presents Christian life as a journey towards God. The traveller needs more than a destination: the path requires landmarks, preparation, provisions, companions, warnings and encouragement. The opening teachings examine why people take this road, how desire and intention are formed, and why the world can rob the heart of peace, joy and its longing for heaven.

The journey is prepared with faith, awareness and trust, then supplied by love, humility, poverty of spirit and patience. The book shows how love for God, Mary and Martha, the sinful woman, the Cross, the Incarnation and the Resurrection becomes strength for the road. It also asks whom we should walk with: Christ, the Holy Spirit, conscience, angels, martyrs and saints.

The middle chapters face the difficulties directly. Bishop Youannis considers Satan’s methods and limits, the help God provides and the weakness within the traveller. He then gathers encouragements: sound understanding, Christ’s companionship, fellowship in the Cross, consolation, glory, patience and hope. Spiritual struggle is named clearly, but it is never allowed to have the final word.

The closing section looks towards victory: finishing the race, entering new life and standing with the witnesses who endured, including the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. The book is for readers who need to locate themselves on the path, recover courage after failure and keep moving towards God with a more attentive heart. Its final cry is Paul’s: ‘I have finished the race.’

Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
