About This Book
Where do we belong when the earth is not our final home? Bishop Youannis of Gharbia explores the Christian hope of heaven as a present calling and a promised destination. Drawing on seven talks delivered during Great Lent, he asks what it means for a human being to live as a heavenly creature while still making an earthly pilgrimage.
His teaching moves from the longings of the human heart to the heavenly Jerusalem, the City of God and the life of the age to come. Prayer, love, almsgiving and communion with the saints give this hope a place in daily life. The mysteries of heaven are approached through Scripture and with a pastor’s concern for the people who hear him.
The book considers angels, death and resurrection, what happens after death, and entry into heaven. It then turns towards Christ’s second coming and the heavenly wedding. These subjects belong to one connected question: how does the promise of eternal life shape the way a Christian understands the present?
For readers seeking a thoughtful account of Christian hope, Heaven offers a sustained invitation to look towards God’s promised future. It joins teaching about the world to come with the prayer, repentance and love through which the believer begins to live towards that home.
Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
