About This Book
Bishop Youannis of Gharbia begins with a question shared by every human life: what does suffering mean, and how can it be understood in the light of Christ? Reading the Old Testament alongside the New, he follows the movement from suffering as punishment or mystery to suffering seen through the Cross, where Christ bears humanity’s sin and transforms pain into a place of fellowship with God.
The book enters the school of suffering through Christ’s childhood, ministry, Gethsemane and encounter with Peter. It asks why God permits beloved people to suffer, and considers discipline, deliverance from self-righteousness, purification, humility and the growth of virtue. Love is central: love prepares the believer to endure, while endurance becomes a form of witness and discipleship.
Bishop Youannis then gathers the blessings and practices that sustain a sufferer—patience, forbearance, love, humility, hope and faith. His counsel does not erase grief; it teaches the reader how to carry the cross without losing confidence in God. The examples are concrete and varied: Job, Jeremiah, Paul, Macarius, Febronia and James the Dismembered show different forms of faithful endurance.
The final movement turns to supplication, bringing the teaching back to prayer. For anyone trying to make sense of pain, to accompany another person in affliction or to remain faithful through a hard season, this book offers a scriptural and pastoral way to ask what suffering can become when it is met with Christ’s love.
Bishop Youannis (1923–1987), Bishop of Gharbia, was a Coptic Orthodox monk, teacher and pastor. This work belongs to his twentieth-century ministry of preaching and Christian formation.
